a friend emailed me and said that he liked the GB but it wouldn't let him sign. he tried several times (only text) and it wouldn't let him. he's running linux.

Either the permissions are not set to 777 or he is trying to enter forbidden text. Is anyone able to sign? If others are, then he is probably trying to enter something that is not allowed.
