Updateing from Raven2.10 to 2.20 for dummys

O.k. I have looked over the new 2.20 files and I am realy confused (big suprize lol)

O.k. I have Raven 2.10 with content and members. I also have Raven 2.20 downloaded to my computer and all files are unziped.

How do I get 2.20 up and running without loosing all my 2.10 information?

I am assuming that I need to back up my 2.10 then erase all my files and clear my sql. then I need to up load the 2.20 files and the 2.20 sql.

Then I erase the user sql and replace it with my old user sql right? what about my content modual and Forum (it is the only other moduals I have any info in that I want to transfer to the 2.20 site)

I know I am sounding dumb here but you guys are getting use to it lol

No, you don't clear your database. You load the new files and run the upgrade script. That's all.

If you do what you are proposing you will be creating a big headache for yourself.

Backup everything, programs and tables to a safe place.

Then you need to load up the 2.20 files. Generally we recommend a fresh installation of them rather than replacing the old files because replacing will leave obsolete files still in place. Then run the upgrade scripts.

All this is covered in the HowToInstall manual that comes with the distribution and particularly in the section on upgrading. It makes no sense for us to try to replicate the manual in Forum posts so take some time to read it.

sorry Kelly if you thought I was looking for a how to without looking at the HTI files. I did look at them and even printed the upgrae section but as evader knows I am a bit dim witted at times and am worried tht I will screw up and have not found any clairity from the boards or the HTI files.

For example I am a little more clouded by your refrence to "fresh instaliation" in the upgrading setion it mentions some files that you should not over write (config, .htaccess, staccess, ftaccess, ultramode, ect) wouldn't a fresh instaliation mean eraseing the old files?

If I am understanding Evader right then I should FTP the 2.20 files to the root just as I did the 2.10. If this is true then the upgrade will take care of combining the old and new?

wow my head is realy hurting now lol. maybe it would be easier to just erase everything and start from scratch and tell my members I had a critical crash please re join lol. maybe insted of saying dummy I should say upgrade instructions for a pre kindergardener.

This is my first upgrade of nuke ever. I always just used what ever version was avalible in the past and said heck with it. New is easy this upgrade stuff is over my head I think.

No problem wrecit. I neglected to mention not overwriting config.php and rnconfig.php and ftaccess and htaccess and that's my fault. That's why we prefer to refer to the documentation rather than "winging" ad hoc responses here. There have been several recent threads of discussion re. fresh installation versus updating, and if you can preserve the files I just mentioned a fresh installation is always preferred. But inadvertently overwriting files you still need can have negative consequences ... and that's why we always say, do a backup first. With a backup that is in a place you can access, going back and getting, say your database settings from config.php, is easy. Without it, it could be a nuisance.

This stuff is not easy for any of us, you just need to keep plugging ahead in a consistent fashion. Make written notes for yourself. Take the time to back things up. Read and reread. Set up a test installation on your localhost so you can test things without disrupting your ongoing system. And just generally hang in there and you will get better with time.
