IP added to htaccess question

isn't an IP that has been added to the .htaccess file in the root directory supposed to prevent that IP from access to the site at the server level ? in other words they shouldn't be able to go any further on my site...??..

reason i ask is i am getting a repeat banning of the same IP address from sentinal and the IP is added to the .htaccess file..but sentinal continues to ban the ip 3-4 times a day

thats because its remote...
meaning,the person / computer isnt realy on your site...
so although he or whatever is banned they still can contact your site...
the fact that this happens shows its automated....probably a script that runs...
no big deal.

nope its not. its a spam operation hitting the "submit news" time to disable it for awhile

The .htaccess file should protect your site. It tells Apache to stop processing before it even goes the your Nuke script. So it should not be setting off Sentinel.

If the .htaccess is not working, then either its not being processed by Apache or there is some other error.

From what I understand about .htaccess, I have to side with evaders99 on this. It should be blocking them from your site completely once written to .htaccess.

Have you actually opened your .htaccess file in a text editor and made sure it is properly writing the deny statements, and that each one is on a separate line?

You may also want to consider moving the deny statement to the top of your htaccess file depending on what else you have in there.
