I am interested in showing the Top Posters' forum rank icon instead of their avatar. How can this be done?

This can be done by selecting forum rank from the database, Then grabbing the associated picture from the bb forums, Ill need to see your version of phpbb plus the layout of nuke to provide you with a proper code.
