Multiple topics on the home page

Total newbie here. I'm brand new to PHP and mySQl but after a month of trial and error (thank god for these forums) I have a functioning site at [ Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login! ]

The question I have is that when you get to the home page you have a message at the top and below it you have your main story which runs the rest of the length of the main page. What I would like to do is have multiple topics displayed on the main page broken up into different sections. I've seen it on a number of sites and have spent hours looking through the FAQ's and this forum but I just don't know what to do.

Do I need a different news module? Am I overlooking something? Please bear with me.

This may not be what you want, but I would suggest breaking up your long news article into the "Story Text" and "Extended Text". I usually like to keep my "Story Text" to about 250 characters or less and then they can click on the "Read More...", or equivalent, link to get the full story.

I think [ Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login! ] might have a different approach to the home page that you may find useful. I don't know how active they are anymore, but it might be closer to what you were looking for...
