Corupt db and power serge

We had a power serge on the web server this morning. must have a fairly big one as it got thru the UPS.
I was working on a couple user tables, left the pages open and went to bed to finish in the morning.
The surge hit closed ups monentarly (unusual) turned off the web server.
The ups then rebooted the web server fine
The result was that those ppl whos tables where still open (including my table) had errors on the main site page.
Repair would not work as this also had something wrong.

Fix
I turned off apache etc, grabbed the back up tables for users (actual db files) and replaced.
All was fine and hit repair ..all worked well.
EXCEPT some of the ms analyisis tables when doing a phpmysql word search.
I copied these table files from the backup, and used repair
Now all fixed. about 5 mins

Dont leave phpmysql open....close windows when finished
If I did not have full web server files backed up every 24hrs I could have been in deep trouble.

It makes me wonder, how many dbs are caused by this or similar actions because unless on has full access to a server logs it would be difficult to know and fix.

Actually, phpMyAdmin is only a symptom. If someone had been posting in the forums at that very moment, the same thing could/would have occured. Any open table will suffer like this in a power drop/spike. Normally you do not have to do and do not want to do a restore. You want to use phpMyAdmin and do a Check Table and then a Repair Table. Of course you want to close all browser sessions and then open a new connection to phpMyAdmin before doing so. In almost all cases that will repair everything and you won't lose anything except possibly the last transaction that was in progress. If that doesn't work, then your next option would be the restore.

That would explain when I ran a check on tables an warning something about table not closed......thu everything was working ok.
Then ran a repair and those warnings then disappeared.
So I assume someone may have been posting as the spike hit.
Your post clears up and explains the background stuff well.

I am only posting this thread so others who do have a similar incident (assuming they run a forum search lol) have a reference in the future.
