No Avatars an option?

We want our forums to be an accessory and not the main feature of our site. As such, we would prefer to not have the avatar feature. However, even though I've turned off all the avatar features in Avatar Management in the control panel, I still get the big ugly "where's the picture?" red X.

Is there a way to turn off the avatar feature completely, but later revisit it and turn it on if we decide otherwise?

run this query through phpMyAdmin:
update nuke_users set user_avatar = 'gallery/blank.gif';

The Your_Account module might need editing to take out the avatar selection section.

Well, we decided to go ahead and use avatars. However, we can't link them (they just don't show after submitting the URL), and can't upload them (get a message that only jpgs and gifs and png extensions are allowed, when, of course, all we're submitting are jpgs and gifs).

Big red Xs aren't attractive. Can this be fixed?

In modules/Forums/viewtopic.php look for the following and remove it! Shocked

The first and only fix I ever got working. Users that fail to register an avatar have nothing. Guest has nothing.

Members have what ever they choose, when they get around to it.

You are partially correct. You also need to block out the logic in Your_Account/index.php that shows the same basic display. Otherwise it appears that they can select an avatar.
