This is from php.net:

13-Jul-2007 Today it is exactly three years ago since PHP 5 has been released. In those three years it has seen many improvements over PHP 4. PHP 5 is fast, stable & production-ready and as PHP 6 is on the way, PHP 4 will be discontinued.

The PHP development team hereby announces that support for PHP 4 will continue until the end of this year only. After 2007-12-31 there will be no more releases of PHP 4.4. We will continue to make critical security fixes available on a case-by-case basis until 2008-08-08. Please use the rest of this year to make your application suitable to run on PHP 5.

Thoughts on how this will impact Nuke?

Personally I'm ready to dive in with PHP5. My impression is that many hosts and providers still only provide PHP4.

I've been using php5 for a while now and I can say nuke runs just as well as it did in php4.
I'll finally be able to use private/public/protected/static functions without worrying about the code not working in php4.

My concerns are the host. Gremmie, is correct about a lot of them stuck on 4. I just recently started to observe and use some of the great function in 5. I am anxious for the change.

I am anxious as well. This is really good news in my opinion. I was wondering what it would take to get Hosts to start making the shift. But, this might do it.

I have been running RavenNuke on PHP5 for about 10 months now and with no issues.

I think we'll see more a shift to PHP 5 as standard when webhosts upgrade their control panels.. (CPanel, Plesk, etc). So far there's no need to do so, but as they get new servers, I'd expect they would upgrade their software to match.

I agree. Odd, though, in that Cpanel already supports PHP5.2.x and mySQL 5.0.x with version 10. I have been running with this for about 10 months now. Everybody should download and install XAMPP (for those you do not like to install the individual pieces), load a copy of their site on their PC, and test away with PHP52/mySQL50 and if everything is good to go, push your hosts to upgrade you!!!! Smile

Ok, pretty weak RAH-RAH, but that is all I have after a rough Monday at the office...

Hey fellas,

I havent been around much, but saw this forum and was like, really?

I noticed a major change in php in the last few months, one that I must admit, I dont like.

PHP5 is great, but umm, has anyone noticed the errors?

It seems to me that it is far more strict then php4, which is something I personally liked about php4, its use of warnings, instead of fatal errors. But hey, I suppose that we will not really have a choice now, will we?

I hope that php6 has the use of warnings down, and takes care to not kill everything with a fatal error, I suppose, I'm still stuck on that.

It's still a world of developers and customers, so I suppose that everyone will need to work just a little harder to keep those errors down.

I haven't used PHP5 all that much, but doesn't it have the same warning/notice mechanism where you can select your level of warnings/errors? I personally like it when a language is trying to tell me I am doing something "iffy". Smile I always try to compile C++ code with the highest level of warnings I can. But I have used tools that generate too much noise also and I know they can be annoying.

I've started sketching out an object oriented CMS using the same concepts of Nuke: modules, themes, etc...and I'm loving it! I've already asked my host when can I get PHP5. LOL.

gregexp, I have not experienced anything that I would not expect. PHP5 and above, by design, is enforcing better coding habits (by the php.ini defaults). I believe that some things you can still "ratchet down" via php.ini settings, but IMO, I appreciate the stricter behaviors. And, of course, PHP by nature is still quite open and forgiving, more so than many other languages...

host have to.
Things like gophp5.org offer two great services:
- software listing
- hosts listing

So if your software/host isn't listed you have enough time to switch to another host/software Smile

From php.net:

Quote:

The PHP development team would like to announce the immediate availability of PHP 4.4.9. It continues to improve the security and the stability of the 4.4 branch and all users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to it as soon as possible. This release wraps up all the outstanding patches for the PHP 4.4 series, and is therefore the last PHP 4.4 release.
