Since we're into Shakespearean slips...beware the ides of chat. There seem to be quite a few issues securing chat rooms. SPChat is reported to have many such issues, though I have not researched them in depth. JabberNuke is another option, but I've heard nothing about it.

Dragonies, if you've tried JabberNuke, would appreciate your remarks.

Hi and good morning,

No sorry I havent tried Jabbernuke yet.

I like the chat forum rooms but they are expensive. I guess you pay for their server since they host the rooms. They are the best I have seen so far in javascripts. I might get them later on when I have more site members.

best wishes Dragonies

I'm looking for a chat solutions as well and i came across
[ Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login! ]
Its documentations make phpnuke intergration look fairly straightforward.
I'll report back then i have installed it.

Its pretty efficient as it uses Ajax. Its licences a little like phpnuke with the latest version only available for purchase and older versions freely available. $15 doesn't seem to high to me.

Personally I'd like a jabber/flash solution for phpnuke but there is none available, yet! (takers)

Currently, im playing around with various ajax chat applications for one of my nuke sites. Why ajax? Well, in my opinion superior over any other technique.
Ok, ontopic again... I've found two, or maybe three applications which i belive has a good potential.

First one is X7 from [ Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login! ]
This already has some kind of implementation to nuke (amongst others). Basically, it hooks up to the nuke config file, decodes the nuke cookie and inserts the user data into it's own tables. I smell a possible security exploit on this one, hovever it's superior to the others when it comes to functionality.

The second is PhpFreeChat from [ Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login! ]
Also a good application, but seems to be more in a state of developement and havent been around for as long as X7. Biggest differense is probably the use of flat file database (X7 uses sql). No direct nuke implementation, however it may be implemented with some effort.

The third one is more simple. CSS PopUp Chat from [ Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login! ]
As i said: simple. Public and private chat only. No "christmas tree features", plain and simple. This one has been ported to Joombla. It does use it's own sql tables. I did some kind of nuke "implementation" on this one, basically decode the cookie and grab the user name to be used in the application.

There are 'tons' of ajax based chat applications, probably 15-20 working (and free) ones. Some might be considered to be more a proof of consept, others are stable and has alot of features. Google is a good friend!

Well, i hope this little review or what you may call it is of some help. Im no coder nor an expert on the subject, but in some way i hope it's useful. I do really hope some coder picks up this and make/extend an already working ajax based chat and make it work with nuke...with the security issues it will raise at some point.

Opinions for chat rooms? - Yup, don't bother with them!
Sorry but thats my opinion, I just do not see any reason why I would want to put a site at risk when I have forums.

Perhaps I am an old cynic but what purpose do they serve?
They do not contribute to the sites content, they don't promote intelligent conversation or the exchange of idea's / information that might be useful to others in the way that forums can.

Am I just to old? lol

php121 seems pretty good to me. It uses AJAX. I have submitted a fix to the author to make it look right for Mac/Safari browsers, but he hasn't incorporated it yet.

Well, I would be really grateful to find a decent one. I was using SPChat on one site I have (phpnuke 7.Cool, worked REALLY well.... Then I started up another site for a different group, decided to use the new version of RavensNuke76 which is currently offered. Installed the module but having issues getting it to work properly. Came here looking to see if there were other reports and instead found tons of info on it being a security risk...

I need a good chat program for these sites, they are educational in nature and we have even held online lectures/classes in them.

Can someone please advise?

We need it to intergrate with nuke.
Offer multiple rooms.
Offer user created rooms.
Produce a chat log including who enters/exits.

I use this program and it works fine and only costs 5$. I did have some module issue but they all worked out fine.

Its a Flash Chat and allows you to have your core files outsite of the html directory using sockets.

I have this program already. Could you email me privately with info on how you got them to work together? Scripts would be really helpful as I am a total noob and quite lost on most programming.

I can be reached at [ Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login! ]
