Make users post reply to see a link/URL hack?

I know there's one for phpBB, but tried looking everywhere for any ported version. I basically want to protect a link till someone replies in the post, that way I have a general idea of who is downloading what.

I would ask this at PortedMods.com but for some reason I never get the e-mail for account confirmation.

Protect what link, where, under what circumstances do you want 'the link' protected?
Protected from what? From appearing in a forum post?
