Custom PHP.INI to turn off display_errors stops user login?

My web host has display_errors on in the master php.ini. We can't edit httpd.conf, and because PHP is compiled as CGI instead of an Apache module, we can't turn off display_errors in .htaccess. Thus, a custom php.ini in the nuke directory is the only choice.

However, when I tried this, users (including me) could not log in (I could as an admin, though). phpinfo() showed that display_errors WAS off.

When I renamed the php.ini, users could log in again.

What gives?

Guess I didn't read your post close enough.
You can set them to off in the mainfile php too
/* This shuts of uninitialized error reporting */
error_reporting( E_ERROR | E_WARNING | E_PARSE | E_COMPILE_ERROR );

Thanks again, sixonetonoffun. I also used ini_set in mainfile to turn off display_errors.
