I was just thinking today, is there any way to cater meta tags and even may be parts of the page differently for different bots? Like querying bot/crawler name and rendering page so it meets this particular search engine requirements (providing one has a clue what those requirements are) ?

No. You show different versions of the same page to anonimous users, to registered users, to members, to admins. Why not categorize anonimous users further - human, google bot, yahoo slurp, etc. and show them slightly different meta and content? I suppose bot reports its name when asking for a page to be rendered for it?

No offense but that sounds like cloaking.

I guess it all depends on the extent. If you dont change the page dramatically, but slightly adjust keyword densities in different parts of the page according to current search engine requirements, I think this should be OK.
And don't tell me you are not fighting for a better SE placement for your absolutely legitimate pages Wink

well i dont know the english name for it but fooling robots gets you banned, simple as that.
basically your redirecting robots to pages showing different content / keywords etc...
thats not allowed...
but your free to do so...

No Hit, not to that extent.

Let me tell you how I came to this thought. I bought IBP (SEO soft, if someone does not know), and after I ran it against my site, it gave me contraversial recommendations about title for google and yahoo. Basically, one thinks keyword should be mentioned only once there, the other one likes it twice. And I just thought - why can't I serve different versions of the title to different bots? And then not only title - for example, having keywords in block titles and playing with the number of secondary blocks can easily give you different keyword densities...
