Bad header in notification mail from phpbb2

I have discovered a small bug in phpbb2 and that is that the subject in notification mail is not encoded for 8-bit characters that are present in some languages like German, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish. In phpbb3 this issue has been dealt with an the subject line is in such cases encoded by UTF-8. In e-mail clients like Thunderbird the subject line is encoded in ISO-8859-1.

I have found a patch for emailer.php that should fix this issue, but it has a small glitch that I hope to get help with:

The patch works very well, but if two adjacent words contains 8-bit characters they are integrated: på inlägg is displayed as påinlägg like a single word.

I have looked in the source code of mail. From patched emailer.php
på inlägg is encoded as two separate words, which probably make them to integrate.

In Thunderbird, however the på inlägg is encoded, as if was one word and then in the subject line you could see them as separate words.

Do anyone knows how the patch can be modified, so it displays two adjacent 8-bit containing words as separate words?
