Block spacing

I'd like to change the vertical spacing between blocks, both for side blocks and center blocks. The spacing I have in the theme I'm working on is too much. It's like 50 pixels and and I'd rather have 10 pixels.

I would have thought this would be easy ... but I'm not finding it easy at all. I've searched forums on various support sites, I've tried to figure it out by viewing source for various sites and themes. I just don't get it.

Any help, clue, links would be welcomed and appreciated. Thanks.

How is your theme structured? Do you have files like header.html, footer.html, blockL.html, etc.?

yes, complex theme with all the story_home.html, header, footer, blocks, etc.
The theme I'm working on is a variation of subice.
