Check the message on your firewall software. Norton and Zone Alarm have issues. In any event, try turning them off before attempting a download.

To prevent leeching I use a mod_rewrite directive to ensure that the download requests are coming from my sites only. Download accelerators and firewalls like to be in control Smile but so do I Laughing

No, it isn't. But, here it is. Just add these directives to your .htaccess file and place it in the file that contains your downloads. Modify the YOURDOMAIN to reflect the valid domain that you redirect from.
Code:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(.*)YOURDOMAIN\.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.([mpg|mpeg|zip|tar|exe|avi|mov|gif|jpe?g]+)$ - [NC,F]
