I don't know about the rest of you, but reading the news today about Iraqis celebrations rubes me the wrong way! are they celebrating because they are proud of how they can now provide their own security or are they celebrating that the "infidel" Americans are getting out?

So maybe we could all learn from it and stay out of other people's countries with our military.

Oh ... I forgot ... they had weapons of mass destruction pointed at us.

if someone had been bombing and occupying my country off and on for 17 years, I might be dancing in the street when they left too Smile Yes we removed a horrible dictator, and the world has no shortage of those, but we also destabilized the region... I have to wonder how long until we have to go back because of a coup, Iran, or other...

lol....was that area ever "stabilized"? Unless you consider a ruthless, murdering dictator and his sons as being "stabilized". Did the bombing you referred to have anything to do with their invasion of Kuwait?

I hope they are ready to provided their own security. (not sure they really have the backbone to stand up for themselves) If not, the soldiers who gave their all there, was wasted for the most part.

I'm just glad our young men and women are getting out of there. There will be no true peace in the Middle East.

I think in time it will turn out to be a positive. We specially in the western cultures tend to look at things too much in the short term.
I from the start apposed the war however you can not deny that Iraq is thanks to the US and friends in a better situation today then before. I believe very few would rather have the days of Saddam instead of what they have now. Perhaps they did not feel like that a couple of years back when Donald Rumsfeld made a mess of things. Despite all the mistakes and intent, the boots on the ground, military is there for one thing from the start, and that is to serve and to fight for freedom even if it was not their own freedom or for their kids, one can only admire such a core belief that runs deep in our military! Yes I'm glad they are getting out, but as I said before it kind of rubbed me the wrong way Mad

I'm something of a relic of scepticism when it comes to politics. Regardless of whether you have a Democracy, Monarchy, Fuedal (etc) society.
Personally, I think Lord Acton had it about right;
Quote:
The man who prefers his country before any other duty shows the same spirit as the man who surrenders every right to the state. They both deny that right is superior to authority.

Quote:

The most certain test by which we judge whether a country is really free is the amount of security enjoyed by minorities.

Quote:

Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is itself the highest political end.

Lord Acton, Lecture, February 26, 1877
Quote:
Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Lord Acton, Letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton, 1887
Quote:
The danger is not that a particular class is unfit to govern. Every class is unfit to govern.
