Doesn´t the your account shows the total points ?
Don´t know how to do this in viewtopic. In my opion its not worth to add it there. You will need to change several files.
An other way would be to show the the total points in the user info block and a block with top users with the highest points. This was handeld by GPoints module a Your Account hack. The best point system I ever used.

I'll offer some tips. You need to edit viewtopic.php to pass the variable to the templete. It is already in the user array so it should be easy. Then you need to edit your viewtopic templete to display it.

How do you view a list of people registered on your site with how many points they have?
