i'm wondering if i should change back to windows server. I just changed to the linux to enable RewriteMod however I am having problems now with .htaccess file.

server log says

Quote:
#
[Tue Jul 10 20:14:15 2007] [alert] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] /home/xxlinux166/x/xlii.xxxxxxxxxx.co.uk/user/htdocs/.htaccess: Options not allowed here
#
[Tue Jul 10 20:17:38 2007] [alert] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] /home/xxlinux166/x/xlii.xxxxxxxx.co.uk/user/htdocs/.htaccess: deny not allowed here

if i remove the start of the file as it was originally installed on windows server, Options all indexes and the all of the sentinel stuff i can access my site, but as long as those things are there it gives me internal server error.

it seems that only things i can have in the .htaccess on linux server is Rewrite_Mod.. well, that is the only thing supperted by Apache, is there a fix to this or should i change back to windows server, forget about shortlinks and carry on as usual?

By the way this solves my Captcha problem too, as pages were just hanging on windows server even tho it has all GD libs installed

Were you using Apache web server under Windows or IIS web server under Windows? The issue isn't about Linux but I need to know which web server you were using before answering further.

My host provides one of two options, and i can instantly switch between the two:

LINUX (Redhat Enterprise v3.0 with Apache v1.3)
WINDOWS (Windows Server 2003, IIS v6.0)
both have GD installed 2.0.28 and servers support following:

Quote:
Window 2003
ASP (Active Server Pages)
PHP (PHP Hypertext Processor)
CGI (Common Gateway Interface) executables
iHTML (Inline HTML)
PERL (Practical Extraction and Reporting Language)
SSI (Server Side Includes)

Redhat Enterprise Linux:
PHP (PHP Hypertext Processor)
CGI (Common Gateway Interface) executables
PERL (Practical Extraction and Reporting Language)
SSI (Server Side Includes)
Python 2.2.3

SSL
ASP (Active Server Pages)
PHP (PHP Hypertext Processor)
CGI (Common Gateway Interface) executables
iHTML (Inline HTML)
PERL (Practical Extraction and Reporting Language)
SSI (Server Side Includes)

Linux server provides it's own PasswordProtected folders, this unfortunately does not work for admin.php as it requires direct access to said folder and admin.php is called from outside, my host uses .htaccess and .htpasswd files created automatically.

Windows server can offer similar at and extra charge but it protects files not folders.

I finally realized why my page is hanging when loading security code. If i access my site directly, it loads fine, and i'm guessing on both servers it worked fine, as when i call from an alias, the pages hang. I noticed this just now as my alias took time to propagate and for a while i was using direct link to my site. Is there anything that can be done about it, or will I have to upgrade my alias to a full account?

EDIT: I have decided to transfer my account on to the alias domain, but before i do that, can you also advise me out of the two options I have for hosting my site which one is better server for hosting RN, seeing windows and linux have something that will make parts of RN and sentinel not work.

I would recommend using Linux / Apache. That should let you use .htaccess options and other good stuff
