It takes a bit of creativity to make money on a GPL'ed product. You can charge for support or maintenance. You can ask for donations. You can charge to do custom work for a client (like create a custom theme or module).
I sympathize with the theme designer, but module authors are in the same boat. Our modules have to be GPL'ed and we have to provide source code on request (which is why it makes no sense to obfuscate; might as well leave the PHP source unobfuscated to satisfy that requirement).
It is probably the smartest thing FB did was to make PHP-Nuke under the GPL, IMHO. That way other people can take it and run with it, making it better and more secure without legal hassles. Hmmm...kind of like RavenNuke.
