Attachment mod and Forums

I have a question. I have searched this site and did a Google search and still have not found a fix for this, I was hoping someone could help.

What is happening now:

When some opens the forums and "attaches" an image to their posting, everything works as designed.. Image gets uploaded, then attached to the post. It then creates an image in the posting.

What i want to happen:

Now when they do it, the image is posted enormous (dimensions not file size) almost as if its at 100% it looks like. Is there any way to "thumbnail" that or set a fixed 800 x 600 size?

I have tried to go to "Manage Special Categories" and set dimensions. and then it just either shows my image if its under those dimensions and does not if its not those dimensions.

When i click "create thumbnail" i get

The Directory './../modules/Forums/files/thumbs' does not exist or couldn't be found.

by the way .. i am using rn2.3

So i did a few different things .. one of them was when i changed it to "FTP" upload and now it is creating thumbnails. Thanks
