well after playing around on my new service and adding GD extentions to PHP. My PHP is now running as cgi and not as a mudule. I can live with that and maybe will figure out what I did.

My question is this. What modules for Apache and PHP are good for security and which are not. I will be doing a lot of looking on the web myself on this but this is the first time I had a web provider or account where I could compile and install my own stuff, so I am looking for a few pointers to help me.

Or any good web sites to go to other then the Apache and PHP web sites. I am already going over those Smile

going from a user to compiler and installer is a much bigger step then I thought.

Apache
mod_security
mod_dosevasive

You don't really have security "modules" for PHP. With PHP it's more of how you set up the php.ini file.

I would suggest the following book as a "must have" in your library:

Pro PHP Security
by Chris Snyder, Michael Southwell

I believe there are two versions. Definitely go for the "Pro" version as it is an excellent read for those you manage their own servers.

Thanks for the responces from both of you. I just decided one day after getting the umteenth call from a friend wanting help or advice on his web site that I should just start hosting my friends and then I know what they have and will make supporting them easier, as dropping hints that I am not a free source of information just doen't seem to work with them. Smile

Just so much more to learn now...
