I want to be able to do a *mirror site* to experiment on, while leaving the current site unscaithed. How would I create a mirrored site as my site exists now but perhaps under a different folder, etc? I can be on the same domain but would be it's own functional site so that I can make changes to it and if they work out then I would make those same changes to the main site. I so hate making any changes because it often causes other problems to fix. It would be nice to work on a mirrored site in the background.

you can do that in 2 ways...
create a folder in your root...like /test/

or do it by subdomain like....

test.yoursite.com
then you can play around, make changes and keep notes of what your doing...
and make a backup of every file you touch .........

and naturaly you first make a copy of your site and upload that to the test site...., that includes the database as well.

Will I have to change config or anything, to get the test site to work in the *new folder*?

the only thing you have to change is the database name and password...
cause you need to make a different database..(second one)
and make sure you set the url correct in the site config....
after that it runs in seconds...

yes...
make a copy of your site and the database that goes with it...

then you go to your cpanel / create a new database / then you dump the copied database in the new created one..... Wink

your new database has different name and pass , change that in your config.php

How do I make a copy of the database? Can I just copy the whole nuke folder and the database is in there? Or is the database somewhere else?

The database is in the SQL server. Easiest way is to use phpMyAdmin to copy your tables to another database.
