The Administration panel (nuke 7.6 patched v3) tells me the number of visitors online at any given time. I'm interested in knowing how that counter decides how many people are on the site.

We're primarily a news and information site, so when things are slow, I see a low number, and when there's a news event that number spikes up pretty high.

But I'm not clear if that number is accurate or what.

Anyone know the methodology used to determine how many visitors (logged in or anonymous) are on the site at any point in time?

Thanks

A quick look at the code in the whosonline block code should give you a rough idea - assuming you are refering to this home page block and not the forums.

Huh? I don't think I'm looking at a block, it's a sentence in the Admin Panel.

And assuming they're the same thing, I still don't get how Nuke knows when someone leaves the site...

They don't. I believe its set to timeout after 5 minutes, so if a user hasn't hit the site before then, the session is removed

That's the piece of the puzzle that was missing - exactly the answer I was looking for.

Thanks!
