Hmm, I have set the content module to be active in Home. I have a page of content added but it still shows the news blocks in home. Also wondering why the categories block says "there isn't content for this block right now"? Is this not related to the categories set up in content?

It works more or less I just tried that. However,I think thats not recommendable to do so because the content modul is a bit like the old section module.
The content should be separate from the main page. Also content blocks doesn´t exist.
But try it out you `ll see how it looks. Deactivate and activate the content in the administration and then put in home.
The categories are indeed not related to the categories of the content but are related to Articles.
