Ok for the gamers out there...

You are administering a website for a gaming clan, using RavenNuke. You want one of those blocks that shows visitors to your website, where your servers are, who's on them and what the server is playing etc etc.

So you get some block script. You edit it to provide your server IP and you have calculated the correct port number. I say this because some games use the same port as you would use to join the server, but depending on the manufacturer some can be as great as..join port+1000 or even +10000.
Then you find it doesnt work. You need to contact your website host and request that he unblocks that port number from the server firewall.

He will then ask you more questions about that port
TCP or UDP
INBOUND or OUTBOUND

This is where many people get confused (including myself). Is the script sending info to the server to get info back?
or..is the script just sending?
or..is the script just receiving?

If your host says "We have a policy of no special ports" then if you need these blocks..change hosts.

I will now leave this topic for someone experienced to explain in more detail, how it works

Cheers
WIZ

What the blocks do typically is open a socket to the remote gaming server's query port using the PHP fsockopen() call. Your host needs to allow you to go outbound to that remote query port. And sometimes they disable the use of fsockopen() too.

Depending on the game, once the port is open, the block may send something and then receive the game info, or it may just receive the data on the socket.

TCP or UDP probably depends on the game. UDP most likely, but I've never had a host ask that question before. Usually the remote port is blocked or not blocked, and TCP/UDP doesn't matter.
