issue with the RN distro. Is it possible that when we create a group and go to add people to that group we get a select all option? I have four pages on my member list and that is a lot of box checking. I know some sites have even more. Also, and maybe I am not understanding how it works, but do I need a Registered group for anything, that would have all members of my site who have registered? Can anyone think where that might be necessary? Thanks all!

I was just thinking about that ... there are times when one may want to add all registered members to a group, except one or two. A select all for the group table would be a groovy solution.

Groups is such a groovy addon. Hugs to Bob and Raven.

How are you using a group in a way that you would not be able to use "Registered Users" instead of specifying a group?

NSN-Groups are normally used for granting access to certain functions / modules / content only for certain groups and for sending newsletters to a group (if you use HTML Newsletter or Fancy Newsletter). Usually, this can also be done for "Registered Users" instead of specifying a group.

I could understand wanting to add all registered users if you want to remove only a few.

To be honest, there are alot of enhancements that I'd like to see get into NSN Groups, but, for the most part, for what it was intended to do (as kguske is eluding to), it does the job. It is usually for restricting access to a much smaller group of users than what you can do with the normal nuke options (similar to phpBB with its group permissions).

Sounds like Groups is what I want to act as a permission filter on different forums so that I can control who gets read/write priveleges rather than just read? I'll have a look around and see if I can sort out what Groups is and how it works, but any advice would be appreciated in the meantime.

Add the group, then add users to that group, then in your Forum admin go to the Forum Permissions (can use either Simple Mode or Advanced Mode) and set your forum to having Private permissions. Then, under Group Permissions (still in Forum Admin), assign that group to that particular private forum.

Is it possible to allow visitors to see dls but only registered to dl with NSN groups?

Not with the core nuke Downloads. But, with NSN GR Downloads, "yes". This is how my site it set up for the latest versions of my downloads. I can even restrict which downloads people see by groups too, if I want to. (I have an occassional need where I will want to give 1 or 2 people access to a new download and not have it accessible by everyone else.)

That worked perfectly, up to the point where I got lost. I've created the group, but can't work out how to add users to the group. I've tried Group Admin and User Admin, but no success.

Can you explain how you did it. They way I have it done visitors cannot see the module...

Again, we're talking ONLY NSN GR Downloads. You MUST allow All Visitors to see the module. That is number 1. So, make sure in your Modules administration, you set it to "All Visitors".

Then, go into "Downloads" and then "Downloads Configuration" and make the setting of "Show Downloads to Everyone" is "Yes".

Last step, as you are adding/modifying downloads, you assign permissions by download. Everyone will see the downloads, but only the category/group of user you want to actually download the module will be able to download it.

I'm still having trouble with Groups and membership. I've created a group and can do permissions, but am unsure of how to add members to the Group. Suggestions?

Within NSN Groups administration there is a function called "Add Users". That is where you add users to the groups.

I'm beginning to wonder if I need some sort of addon, because I can't find 'NSN Groups' which means I still can't add members to groups. Do I need to update or something? I've tried both Goup and User Admin.

yikkity47, you might be confusing the standard groups function with NSN Groups. On the admin page, Users Groups is the default Nuke groups function. Edit Groups is the NSN Groups function. NSN Groups comes with the RavenNuke, but if you're using another distribution, you can download NSN Groups at Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login! as montego suggestion.

OK i thought i had my Mind wrapped around this and Boom confusion set in once again.

I now have my Groups, Permissions, and all seems to work fine.
then in the Admin section i click " Users Group/Points " and now it tells me There aren't any Users Group created at this time.

so best i can figure out is these to are totally UN related.

so how I create A New Users Group that would include ALL Registered Users?

kguske, I'm using PHP-Nuke to operate my school website. I'm playing with the forum module and planning to activate it as soon as I can get this Group membership thing sorted out. I've been to Only registered users can see links on this board! Get registered or login! but have been unable to find the NSN Groups download.

Can you explain a bit more why you would need an NSN Group to do this? Once a user registers, as long as they are logged in, they are already naturally classified by nuke as "Registered Users". You can have blocks, messages and modules set to have only "Registered Users" be able to see them. You can also set up your forums to have permissions such that only "Registered Users" can see or do certain actions within those forums.

So, I am not sure you need a NSN Group for Registered Users... But, I might be missing something very specific that you are looking to accomplish that is outside of the above.

Because its there,
How do i know if i need it if i don't understand the capabilities of it.

Now i Have A use For IT!

I made a group called " Writers "
These are the only ones that are allowed to post story's are articles on the site. This way i can set it to where they can see the modules and no one else is the wiser, They will think i have a writing staff, and i will.

Do i have a grip on the function? will this work?

Then i don't have to worry about the Quality of the post.

quickthrottle, you specifically asked this question and that is what I responded to:

If "Writers" group is made up of ALL of your registered users, then it is not necessary. However, if "Writers" is a subset of your registered users, then you have a "grip" on this functionality! Smile
