Help with porn site *members* please!?

These are NOT legit members since my website (& forums) are for Christians! Is there any way at all to keep these kinds of people from joining my site & forums? Seems I have to delete at least one a day lately : o/

Are you blocking registration for certain domains? You could also use a tool like Approve Membership or CNB YA to require approval before allowing members to join.

I had been told in a previous post it wasn't necessary to do a NS Block IPs, so no, to my knowledge I am not blocking any. Someone please advise me on how to fix this, I have a Christian site and these posts are obviously not edifying to any soul. Membership approval might be difficult since I have five admins total (family) and they don't know anything about admining the site (aside from deleting posts) LOL

All I ever see to ban is the IP address so I have no idea how to block domains unless you mean in NS and I don't have any sort of snert block list at the moment. Does anyone have a NS Block IP list that covers much of these snerts? I'd appreciate it if you'd share it!

I'm the only god at the moment, if there's a way to have membership notification come directly to me for approval that would work I spose. I would like to be notified when I have a new member so I can *check them out*. I would like some sort of notification (to me only but can add other admin emails if necessary) of *new members*. Does such a thing exist?

Yes, you should try one of the above kguske mentioned.
You will receive an email when new members apply. CNB YA will also allow you to block certain email domains from registering.

I don't know what that is, or where to get it. Is it compatible with this version of RN76 2.02.02? I'm still using the bb2nuke (phpbb) that was included in that distro, I haven't updated it. I also have my site changed so that users don't get an email, after registering they're automatically logged in.

Will this CNB YA work still? Have the bugs discussed in other forums here been fixed?

Was that a hosting reason? or one of choice? It could be one of your problems because the user doesn't have to validate their email address.

I have it running on RN and I don't have any problems, but other people do. There have been some fixes posted here if you did experience any problems and I'm sure you'd get good support.

I personally don't have a list, but I'm sure someone here might be able to help, maybe Guardian, he's done a lot of work on blocking spam.

I just prefer not to have email validation for speed sake, many of my members aren't very php savy and found it hard to navigate with that feature so I went to auto login for simplicity sake. I think if I had some sort of notification of new members that would help, and some way to block already known snert IPs, etc, would also help.

well take it from me..... Laughing ...if you dont secure the stuff a bit as suggested then they will mess up your site some day.
Christian site or not, even i know a few that have 80% locked ,meaning...they have to login..
so why shouldnt you do that ?

Its happening more and more....bogus accounts are created..(i like to call them..sleeping accounts)
and then when nobody expects it they leave spam in the content or forum topic that aren't monitored anymore.

Have you noticed that the undesired members use a few domains when registering?

The only domain I've notice that is repetative is from @cashette.com for emails, otherwise the snert domains have been different, and for the most part I only see IP addys and not actual website urls. I have banned two email addresses on the site by domain because of the severity of the posts from the so called member. Looking up their email addresses on google shows they've posted to many other sites besides mine.

I have several @cashette.com addresses that I have not banned yet, they've joined but not posted. My policy is to not ban until the snert actually posts something *not nice* LOL

Unfortunately these guys are getting a lot smarter. They are using proxies, hacked servers, botnets, other nasty stuff. Getting a list of IPs to block would be nearly impossible.

I would suggest using the Sentinel string blocker to go ahead and block those widely used words associated with porn, drugs, and others. And of course, block the main free emails that these spammers are using.. the ones I've seen are

cashette.com
mail.ru
gawab.com
web.de

I've already banned all emails from mail.ru, but not the others. Cashette.com is a legit email company, like hotmail, from what I can tell so I haven't banned any of those yet. I do have about 10-15 *silent members* using that email already. What would happen to them if I banned that email? Will they remain but no others or should I give them the boot since they aren't active anyway? LOL

web.de is a popular German wep portal, a legitime email company and the winner for the best email spam protection. So I wouldn´t ban them.

Unfortunately their service is being abused by autoregistrations. If they are using a CAPTCHA, it is being bypassed. I have seen examples that easily use these one-click registrations, no problem at all for these guys.

I'm not saying that these companies are deliberately allowing spam, but the abuse of these services on such scale would indicate they are not doing a good job of removing the spam users from their sites.

I took off autologin, it's back to email login where the user has to click email confirmation link. Will taking the site off autologin stop the spammers? LOL

And ... is there a way I can be notified by email when someone joins?

It will slow them down, I doubt it will stop all spammers.

You could use the Approve Membership mod to determine when people join

The version for 7.6 should work with RN no problem.

I've deleted about 10 spammers from members. Now, I'm having an issues blocking email addresses because there is no where on the main site to do that. There is in the forums admin but it doesn't seem to work since they have to log into the site first ...

How do I block email domains (like *@mail.ru or *@cashette.com) for the entire site for RN 2.02.02, which came with phpBB 2.0.20!?

Definitely make sure that new users have to click a registration link in an email. I see all the same people register with my site, but because email registration is required they never complete the registration process.

And as hitwalker said, make sure you disable anonymous comment posting and stuff like that.
